Ashoka University At Your School

Ashoka University School Sessions are interactions with students of classes X, XI and XII at their schools. We have visited over 350 of the most reputed schools across Asia in the academic year 2013-14 and held sessions that discuss the merits of and need for liberal education in India.

These sessions, conducted by eminent Ashoka Faculty and Admissions Team, are aimed equally at understanding students’ perceptions towards higher education. What we intend is a dialogue between the University and its prospective students, their teachers and school administrators, which, we believe, will contribute towards our vision of building an institution of excellence.

About the Session
 

The Ashoka LIVE event will be hosted by Prof. Arjendu Pattanayak, Professor of Physics, Carleton College.

He will begin with an hour-long workshop 'Physics for Poets' where he hopes to engage students with both philosophical and practical questions in physics, by means of a fun and interactive discussion.

Offering a unique perspective on topics that students might be familiar with, Prof. Pattanayak's session will give aspiring students a fair idea of classroom learning at Ashoka University.

The session will be followed by an Open House, where Prof. Pattanayak will be joined by Ashoka University's admissions team in answering questions about the University's academic programmes and admissions process, throwing some light on the scholarship opportunities available at Ashoka, based on students' financial need.

Ashoka, India’s first liberal arts university, to open in August

What started as a lunchroom conversation between IIT Delhi pass-outs Vineet Gupta, MD, Jamboree Education, and Rakesh Jaggi, Vice-President, Sustaining at Schlumberger, has found more than 12 backers from India Inc to launch Ashoka University, India’s first liberal arts university.

Among others, Sanjeev Bikhchandani, Founder and Vice-Chairman, InfoEdge; Puneet Dalmia MD, Dalmia Cements; Jerry Rao, Chairman and Founder, Mphasis; Deep Kalra, Founder and CEO of Makemytrip.com have invested around ₹140 crore in the university, which seeks to bring international education in the Indian context. Ashoka will kick off its first undergraduate programme in August. The university has received more than 1,500 applicants for its undergraduate batch of 350 students.

Programme

Ashoka offers a four-year undergraduate programme where students can chose an area of specialisation from a list of pure majors (such as economics, history, mathematics) and a set of inter-disciplinary majors (like politics and society, economics and finance). The course also offers a broad set of disciplines through twelve foundation courses which include data analysis, great books, critical thinking, and principles of sciences, among others.

“If you see our higher education landscape today, a student with 95 per cent may not get admission in a good college, often because they messed up one exam. So overall it’s quite painful,” Vineet Gupta said.

“I found that the same student would get admitted to a top university in the US, whereas the choice here was an evening college,” he added.

Gupta noted that a lot of the education that is currently taking place, is not preparing students with the skills required for the job market.

Ashoka University has a fully residential campus in Haryana. The university is being set up by the International Foundation for Research and Education, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania University.

Gupta said over the next five years, Ashoka University plans to add more corporate donors and raise over ₹500 crore. While the course fee is around ₹4 lakh per year, Gupta added that of 350 students, 190 students would have some form of scholarships ranging from 25 to 100 per cent.

Ivy League Ups and (Yes) Downs

This New York Times article makes interesting observations on trends in the number of applications received by the eight Ivy League institutions, along with possible reasons for increase and decrease.

Most American students, it says, opt for an undergrad course at an institution within 200 miles of home.

Where would you rather study?

It’s not really a popularity contest, but among the Ivies, is anything not competitive? Applications to the University of Pennsylvania rose by more than 14 percent this year and fell by as much at Dartmouth.

“We are doing some work to understand why,” says Maria Laskaris, Dartmouth dean of admissions and financial aid. For one, there are fewer applicants from the Northeast and Midwest, mirroring declining pools of high school students in the regions. And with most attending college within 200 miles of home, she says, “there are fewer students in our own backyard.” Dartmouth’s reputation has also taken a hit over charges that it has failed to combat sexual violence on campus, spurring the president last month to propose a new sexual assault disciplinary policy.
